The Star People and The Star Woman's Fall

There was nothing except light. The Star People existed in their world up there. There was one called Star Woman. She peered down into a hole in the side of a tree and saw another world down the hole. While she was looking down that hole she bent down too far and she fell. In the other world the Eagle broke her fall and put her on the Turtle's back. She couldn't return to her world so she said she would stay and make this world a better place.

The world was just water at this time. There was no land. Using her powers from the other world Star Woman asked the animals to go and bring up some dirt from the ocean floor. All the animals tried. The beaver couldn't get down far enough. The otter went down too but couldn't make it.

The Teachings of the Muskrat and the Turtle

The last one to try was the muskrat and everyone laughed at him because He was so little. The muskrat dived and was gone for quite a while. Finally the body of the muskrat floated to the surface. In its paw was the mud that Star Woman needed. So the muskrat is held in high regard for its endurance and sacrifice. The Star Woman took the mud and the Turtle volunteered his back to help carry the world. So she put the mud on the Turtle's back and created the world that way.

The Turtle teaches us patience and endurance. It provides the aptitude to be strong during difficult times. It helps one to journey within the inner self, and it is also a guide to help experience the connection between the Creator and us. The Turtle carries the world.
